Block descriptions and placeholders

Add context to your questions with descriptions and placeholder text.

Descriptions

Click the "Add a description" text below any question to add a description. Descriptions appear as smaller, muted text below the question and above the input field. Use them to:

  • Provide instructions ("Select all that apply")
  • Add context ("This will be visible on your public profile")
  • Set expectations ("Please keep your answer under 200 words")

Placeholders

For text input blocks (Short Text, Long Text, Email, Phone), NodumForms automatically generates smart placeholders based on your question text. For example:

  • "Full name" → placeholder shows "John Smith"
  • "Email address" → placeholder shows "you@example.com"
  • "Company" → placeholder shows "Acme Inc."

These appear as light grey text inside the input field and disappear when the respondent starts typing.

Tips

  • Keep descriptions concise — one sentence is usually enough
  • Use descriptions for instructions, not for the question itself
  • Descriptions are optional — don't add them if the question is self-explanatory

FAQs

There's no hard cap, but very long forms (50+ blocks) load more slowly for respondents. For long surveys, consider switching to One Per Page so each question loads incrementally.

Branching logic isn't available yet — it's on the roadmap. The closest workaround today is splitting a form into multiple One Per Page flows and linking between them.

File Upload is a Pro feature, but during beta it's unlocked for everyone. After beta, you'll need a Pro plan to add a File Upload block.
